How to calculate handicaps in match play

How do you calculate a handicap in singles match play?

A Handicap Index describes playing ability but is not yet the number of strokes for a particular course. Course Rating, Slope Rating, par, tee, and national WHS rules first produce the Course Handicap and Playing Handicap.

For singles match play, WHS Appendix C recommends a 100% handicap allowance internationally. The Terms of the Competition or national association may specify something else; for a private match, a clear agreement before the first tee is what matters.

• 1. Determine each player’s Playing Handicap from the tee they use.
• 2. Apply the handicap allowance for the format.
• 3. Set the lowest Playing Handicap relative to zero.
• 4. Give the other players the difference as handicap strokes.
• 5. Allocate the strokes to holes by Stroke Index.

What does a match play handicap look like in an example?

Player A has a Playing Handicap of 9 from their tee and Player B has 17. At a full allowance, A plays relative to zero and B receives 17 minus 9, or eight handicap strokes.

On which holes do handicap strokes apply?

The scorecard assigns a Stroke Index to every hole. With eight strokes, a player receives one on SI 1 to 8. With 20 strokes, the player receives one on all 18 holes and a second on SI 1 and 2.

For a nine-hole round, use the handicap-stroke allocation that applies to that round. Do not simply take the front nine positions of any 18-hole allocation if the course or competition specifies something different.

Does a 100% handicap allowance always apply?

No. The allowance depends on the format and Terms of the Competition. WHS Appendix C recommends 100% for singles match play and 90% for four-ball match play internationally. Other team formats have their own recommendations, and national associations or committees may set the allowances for their jurisdiction.

In a private round, players can also agree to use three quarters or two thirds of the difference. That is a private condition of play and should be documented before the start, not introduced when the match becomes close.

What should you consider when players use different tees?

Players may use different tees, but each tee has its own rating values. Each player’s Playing Handicap must therefore be calculated from the tee they actually use. Comparing only the Handicap Indexes misses this course and tee effect.

How does a plus handicap work in match play?

Plus Playing Handicaps must remain part of the relative difference. Under WHS Appendix C, unless the committee decides otherwise, a player with a plus Playing Handicap gives strokes back starting on the holes with the highest Stroke Indexes. For unusual cases, check the specific Terms of the Competition or the responsible association.
