What does “3 & 2” mean in golf?
Short answer
“3 & 2” means the winner is three holes ahead with only two holes left to play. The opponent can no longer catch up, so an 18-hole match ends after the 16th hole.

How does a 3 & 2 result happen?
After the 16th hole, Player A leads by three holes. Player B can win only the 17th and 18th, making up at most two holes. A would still be one hole ahead, so Rule 3.2a declares the match won after the 16th.
The first number is always the lead in holes. The second number is the number of scheduled holes that would otherwise remain. The “&” sign is read as “and”.
How do you read other match play results?
The same principle applies to every match that ends early. If the match is decided only on the final hole, the result is usually stated simply as “1 up”.

Are the final two holes still played after 3 & 2?
Not as part of that match: its result is final. The players may continue over the remaining holes outside the completed match if course operations and their tee time allow it, but those strokes cannot change the 3 & 2 result.
In a team competition, the won match earns the team point defined by the Terms of the Competition. The margin of 3 & 2 does not automatically award extra points.
What are common misconceptions about 3 & 2?
3 & 2 says nothing about the total number of strokes. The winner may even have taken more gross strokes over the holes played by losing a few holes heavily but winning more holes narrowly.
It is also not a 3–2 score like goals or points. It describes only an unassailable lead in holes and the number of holes remaining.
- Not: three strokes ahead with two strokes remaining.
- Not: three holes won against two holes won in total.
- Correct: a three-hole lead with only two holes still available.
Can a nine-hole match also finish 3 & 2?
Yes. The result works for any agreed match length. In a nine-hole match, 3 & 2 is reached after the 7th: a three-hole lead with two holes left. The number of holes in the match simply needs to be agreed before play starts.
